Human Hair Wigs

Human hair remains a popular choice for wigs, particularly because it feels and looks natural. It can be easily styled, unlike synthetic hair, and it can be permed or colored. During periods of scarcity of cut human hair for wigs, manufacturers have used combings (hairs that fall out naturally at the end of their life cycle). However, actively growing hair that is cut for wig making is preferred. Two types of human hair wigs are 100% human hair and Remy hair. United States wig makers import most of their hair. Italy is known as a prime source of hair with desirable characteristics; other colors and textures of hair are purchased in Japan, India, China, France, Germany, and Spain. Women contract with hair merchants to grow and sell their hair. After cutting, the hair is treated to strip the outer cuticle layer, making the hair more manageable. Wig makers pay $80 or more per ounce for virgin hair, which has never been dyed or penned; a wig requires at least 4 oz (113.4 g) of hair.

The term “Remy” refers to the characteristics of the hair and the method used to manufacture the hair extensions. Remy is high-quality hair. All the hair follicles go in a single direction. Remy hair

is collected in a way so that all of the hair strands stay aligned in the direction that it grew, to maintain the natural pattern and cuticle direction. This eliminates tangling problems that are common in non-Remy or low quality hair. Remy hair is only lightly processed. Remy human hair extensions should last up to 3 to 6 months with regular maintenance. Because of the method of collection, this type of hair is in short supply and is therefore quite expensive.

Human hair wigs come in two categories: processed hair and raw hair. Raw hair is kept together to make sure the cuticles are facing the same direction as they would if they grew from the head. It ensures the most natural look as well as makes brushing easier. When hair cuticles are reversed, they break easier.

These wigs are the most natural. The hair has a natural texture and shine; they can be messy, frizzy, etc. These are the main factors that make it look like natural hair. Nobody's hair is perfect. Moreover, natural hair has more natural color than synthetic hair, which often comes in a flat overall color.

Human hair can be styled with heat just like your own hair. That means you can curl, blow-dry, flatiron, and crimp them without doing any damage to hair fibers. You can also change their color with dyes.

The Pros:

1. Natural Look. Human hair wigs feel great and can look incredibly natural.

2. Styling Versatility. Many human hair wigs can be colored, permed and styled just like your own hair. Keep in mind that it is important to take your wig to a stylist who is experienced in dealing with human hair wigs if you wish to alter the style.

3. Texture. Human hair wigs come in a variety of textures, so you can match your own hair texture very closely.

4. Longevity. With proper care, human hair wigs can last one year or more even when worn daily.

The Cons:

1. Fragile. The hair will incur damage if subjected to harsh brushing, back-combing or overuse of heated styling tools.

2. High Maintenance. Just like real hair, human hair wigs need to be washed, deep-conditioned and re-styled frequently.

3. Cost. Because they are harvested from human hair, they are typically more expensive.

4. Styling. Human hair wigs are more labor intensive and require more effort and skill to style.

5. Reacts to Weather. Like your own hair would, human hair wigs react to the weather and can become frizzy, limp or dry depending on the weather.

6. Color Fading. The color of a human hair wig will oxidize or fade with exposure to light.

7. Color Variation. It is difficult to replicate an exact color when you replace a human hair wig or wish to purchase a back up of the same style. Human hair wigs of the same color will vary slightly from wig to wig because each wig contains hair harvested from multiple people.

8. Weight. Human hair wigs can feel heavier than synthetic wigs of a similar length and style.
